5. Position, junctions and overtaking

Keep left
Stop
Double solid no-overtaking lines

In Namibia, drive on the left, subject to lawful directions, signs and permitted manoeuvres. Good positioning makes your intentions predictable and gives you time to respond.

Before changing direction

Check ahead, mirrors and the blind area relevant to your manoeuvre. Signal in good time, choose a suitable gap and move only when it is safe. An indicator tells others what you intend; it does not give you priority. Cancel it after the manoeuvre so you do not mislead others.

At a junction

Approach at a speed that allows you to stop. Identify the controlling officer, signals or signs. Look for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles hidden by larger vehicles. When turning across approaching traffic, wait for a safe gap. Do not enter a junction that you cannot clear, and do not pressure another driver into giving up their priority.

Passing another vehicle

Overtaking is normally to the right, with specific exceptions in the regulations. For beginner practice, concentrate on a clear, lawful passing opportunity: check signs and lines, see enough clear road, allow a safe distance, and return left without cutting in. Do not overtake towards a blind crest or bend. If uncertain, wait. When another vehicle passes you, do not accelerate to prevent it from returning safely.

Practice: describe your observation, signal and gap checks before a lane change. Then name two reasons you would abandon an intended overtake.

Exam preparation: details to remember

Parking numbers to learn under regulation 338: keep clear of the prescribed area 1.5 m on either side of an identifiable fire hydrant. In an urban area, do not park within 5 m of an intersection or within 9 m on the approach side of a marked pedestrian crossing unless the appropriate signs permit it. Never obstruct a driveway. Passing a right-turning vehicle on the left is only allowed when otherwise lawful and safe. Do not use a railway crossing as a stopping place.
