7. Code 2: light-vehicle controls

L
Learner identification
Keep left

Learn what each control does before attempting to use it in traffic. In a typical manual car the pedals, from left to right, are clutch, brake and accelerator. An automatic normally has no clutch pedal. Vehicle designs vary, so check the owner’s handbook and learn the actual vehicle with an instructor.

Build a control checklist

  • Steering wheel: changes direction; smooth inputs help maintain control.
  • Clutch: connects or disconnects engine drive for starting and gear changes in a manual vehicle.
  • Service brake: slows or stops the vehicle.
  • Accelerator: controls engine power.
  • Parking brake: helps secure the vehicle when parked; it is not a replacement for normal service braking.
  • Mirrors, indicators, lights and wipers: support observation, communication and visibility.

Before moving, adjust the seat, mirrors and head restraint and fasten the seat belt. Understand warning lights and do not continue with a safety-critical fault. Select the correct gear and check around the vehicle before starting a manoeuvre.

For ordinary learner driving in a car, the regulations require direct supervision by a person licensed for that vehicle class. A red L sign is required in the prescribed rear-window position. An online certificate does not replace those conditions.

Practice: with the engine off, point to the controls and explain their functions. Arrange practical instruction separately; Tuvawawa currently offers Code B driving lessons in Nkurenkuru.

Exam preparation: details to remember

Diagram key: 1 clutch pedal, 2 service-brake pedal, 3 accelerator pedal, 4 gear lever, 5 parking-brake lever, 6 steering wheel. Use the speedometer for speed and the odometer for distance. Rear passengers must use available seat belts properly. Layouts vary and an automatic normally has no clutch pedal.
